A co-worker was walking through another job site when he heard a call for help. On investigation he found two men from one of the mechanical trades standing on a tilted rolling scaffold and hanging onto the bar joists overhead. After he had replaced the casters which had dropped out of the high side of the scaffold base, the mechanics were able to set the scaffold down on the level. They had been rolling the scaffold along when it started to tilt. Fortunately they held onto the joists so the scaffold did not overturn but it had tilted far enough to let the casters fall out and they could not set the scaffold down or it would have overturned in the opposite direction.

The Steel Scaffolding Institute suggests a number of safety rules for rolling scaffolds, including the following:

1. Do not ride rolling scaffolds.

2. Remove all material and equipment from platform before moving scaffold.

3. Caster brakes must be applied at all times when scaffolds are not being moved.

4. Do not attempt to move a rolling scaffold without sufficient help - watch out for holes in the floor and overhead obstructions.

5. The working platform height of a rolling scaffold must not exceed four times the smallest base dimension unless guyed or otherwise stabilized.
